The signage on Bloomfield Avenue changes faster than the seasons. By early August, a walk from the north end of downtown down to Orange Road passes a farm-to-table Italian room that was a Thai kitchen last winter, a Brooklyn ice cream shop scooping small-batch flavors, a late-night cookie counter that stays open past midnight on weekends, and a coffee-plus-dinner concept holding a ribbon-cutting on the last day of July.
The instinct is to file all of this as "the food scene is booming." That framing misses what has actually happened. The 2026 openings are not scattered. They are clustering onto three specific spines inside Montclair, and each spine is changing a different part of the week.
Walnut Street is now a three-shop pizza corridor
The tell is 98 Walnut. 3rd Joint, a slice shop and bakery, opened at 98 Walnut Street in Montclair and became the third pizza spot on Walnut Street alongside Brick + Dough and Panzano's, with a menu of thin, crisp slices alongside bakery staples and classic Jersey pizza favorites. The owner, Beverly Lacsina, named it for her third venture. The name works twice.
A block earlier this year had one destination pie shop. It now has three, and they are not competing for the same order. Brick + Dough at 110 Walnut Street launched its Slice Window on April 8, 2026, letting customers grab thin, crispy slices of daily specials without ordering a whole pie, prompting customers to "ring the bell for assistance." That is a walk-up counter aimed at commuters and weekday lunches. 3rd Joint is a sit-and-grab slice shop with bakery items. Panzano's holds the sit-down slot.
If you live within a ten-minute walk, your dinner decision on Walnut is no longer "pizza or not." It is:
- Round pie, sit down, wine list: Panzano's
- Neapolitan, take-out or slice window: Brick + Dough
- Jersey slice plus a pastry for the walk home: 3rd Joint
That is a coordinated block, not three redundant openings.
Bloomfield Avenue is doing sweets and global cuisine at the same time
The Avenue's 2026 openings sort into two categories, and both are running in parallel.

The Italian half of the corridor is where the money and pedigree are. Chef Dan Drohan brings over 20 years in the New York City restaurant world, previously serving as executive chef at Otto Enoteca Pizzeria for 16 years, where he also played a role in launching Eataly Flatiron, Enoteca San Marco, B&B at the Venetian Hotel, and Babbo Boston. A second Italian room, Clementina, is set to open with Adriatic-coast dishes.
The sweets half of the corridor is doing something more interesting for a resident's day. The NYC-based, viral ice cream shop OddFellows is expanding into New Jersey, known for its small-batch approach and creative flavors and having created more than 500 flavors since its first Brooklyn shop opened in 2013. Oggi Gelato took over the former Oasis clothing boutique space at 40 Church Street, which closed in December 2025 after 20 years, and Montclair will mark its first New Jersey location and first U.S. location for the brand founded by Carmelo Chiaramida. Insomnia Cookies opened at 332 Bloomfield Avenue on April 11, 2026, open Sunday through Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. and Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 a.m.
Three dessert stops within a short walk of each other, one of them running past midnight. The Avenue used to close after dinner. It does not close after dinner anymore.
Orange Road and Lackawanna Station: the new commuter spine
This is the block most residents underestimate. It is quietly the biggest change of the year.
Pig & Butter will open at 401-3 and 401-4 Orange Road in Montclair, led by chef and owner Sherri Grimes, who locals may remember from her time at Anderson's 1949. The restaurant features two side-by-side concepts, one focused on an elevated dinner service and weekend brunch with cocktails and wine from Unionville Vineyards and the other a coffeehouse and eatery, and celebrated its opening with a ribbon-cutting on Friday, July 31, at 10 a.m. Two doors, one operator, two dayparts. That layout is designed for a neighborhood that wants a morning coffee spot and a dinner room without switching zip codes.
Two blocks over, the food hall inside Lackawanna Station is now a full year into operation. The new Lackawanna Station officially opened on June 21st, and the space now boasts over 20 new businesses, including Montclair Flea, Ironbound Farm Market, and The Little Shops. Bagel Supreme Go is now open inside Lackawanna Station in Montclair, bringing the family-owned brand's 13th location to New Jersey, serving classic and specialty bagels, breakfast sandwiches, wraps, pancakes, waffles, smoothies, coffee, and more, with a standout build-your-own cream cheese bar with toppings like Nutella and fresh fruit, and gluten-free and vegan bagel options available, located next to BDP just outside The Big Room.
A Bloomfield-Avenue-centric read of Montclair misses the shift. A weekday breakfast used to mean a corner counter or a chain. The Orange Road block now offers a bagel bar inside a train station and a coffeehouse next to a chef-driven restaurant. The commuter routine has changed by two full stops.
Yellow Rose Bakery + Cafe, a Maplewood bakery, will open a second location in Montclair, offering a 100% vegan and kosher menu of breakfast sandwiches, baked goods, seasonal drinks and a rotating selection of gluten-free items each day. That is a fourth breakfast option on this same spine, and it comes from a bakery Maplewood residents already know.
The Essex County loop beyond Montclair
Montclair is not the only Essex address moving this year. Three adjacent towns changed the weekend map.
South Orange got its movie theater back in January. The South Orange Performing Arts Center announced that the theater operator Box Office Cinemas would reopen the movie theater in January 2026, with the return of film set to open on or before January 16th, 2026 according to a statement from James Kula, the President of Box Office Cinemas. A first-run film screen inside SOPAC changes what a Saturday afternoon looks like for anyone in the eastern half of the county.
South Orange also picked up a neighborhood cafe with a civic streak. Tira's Cafe, owned by Raquael Hines, opened in South Orange on April 25, 2026, featuring a Pay It Forward Wall, a Coffee Club subscription, and a budget-friendly Happy Hour, with a menu that includes house-made syrups and drinks inspired by New Jersey, like the Garden State Punch and Ocean Latte.
Bloomfield added an unusual drink counter to an existing bakery. Ladyfingers Bakery + Bar in Bloomfield launched The Fizz Bar in March, introducing dirty sodas with customizable creams, flavored syrups, and other add-ons alongside its mix of bakery items, craft coffee, and cocktails.
Caldwell got the county's most ambitious "third space" experiment. GroundHouse, a new coffee and wellness space in Caldwell, opened in March 2026, centered on the "third space" concept and combining a coffee lounge, social space, and private wellness club with a Finnish sauna, cold plunge, and lounge. A cold plunge inside a coffee shop is not something the county had six months ago.
Fairfield added Global Pour Cafe, which opened in March, bringing flavors and inspiration from the owner's travels around the world and focusing on global coffee and beverages.
Belleville is running a two-track experiment: a permanent food truck park and a heated Pilates studio. A new food truck park is coming to Belleville in 2026 with rotating vendors, with the township already receiving applications, and the Mayor sharing that Cesar Valdivia's Lomo Peruvian Food Truck is one vendor the park would "love to have here," with opening expected in Spring of 2026.
West Orange got the biggest retail footprint of the year. The new Target at West Orange Plaza officially opened in March 2026, with the 150,000-square-foot store occupying the former K-Mart space and including a CVS Pharmacy, Starbucks, and Target Optical, along with Drive Up, Order Pickup, and same-day delivery services.
What this actually changes about a normal week
Read the openings as a pattern and a Montclair week starts to look different.
Weekday morning. Bagel Supreme Go at Lackawanna, the Pig & Butter coffeehouse on Orange Road, and soon Yellow Rose. Three of the four new breakfast options are on the same two-block spine.
Weekday lunch. Hummus Republic on Bloomfield, the Brick + Dough slice window on Walnut, and Jackie's expanded footprint at 612 Valley Road, where Jackie's Grillette has expanded into the larger space next door at 612 Valley Road in Upper Montclair, shortening its name to "Jackie's" while continuing to serve the wraps, sandwiches, breakfast favorites, and fresh juices it's known for.
Weeknight dinner. Campofiore for the anniversary night, 3rd Joint for the Tuesday, Pig & Butter for the special occasion, Clementina once it opens.
Weekend afternoon. Movie at SOPAC in South Orange, gelato at Oggi on Church Street, cold plunge at GroundHouse in Caldwell if that is your speed.
The point is not that Montclair has more restaurants. The point is that the 2026 openings landed on three specific corridors, and a resident who knows which corridor covers which meal spends less time deciding and more time actually eating. The map is denser, and it is also more legible.
